Why I Won’t Be Watching the Superbowl

There’s no denying that I’m not a sports fan. I never have been. So it may not come as a surprise that I won’t watch the Superbowl today. But it’s not for the simple reason of not enjoying – or understanding – the game.

I will not partake in the Superbowl because between the two teams — the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers — there are 8 accused rapists. EIGHT.

I’m no fool. I know that these guys aren’t the only accused rapists participating in the sports industry, or even the entertainment industry as a whole. And while I can’t say I’m a saint and refrain from all avenues of entertainment, I simply can’t bring myself to patronize a game that not only allows accused rapists to participate in the country’s biggest sporting event of the year, but pays them millions.

I also know that my refusal to watch the Superbowl won’t make the slightest bit of difference to the players, sports enthusiasts and football franchises that contribute so much to American culture. But it’s my small way of being an activist today.

  1. I hear you. There are so many battles to choose from but every little stand counts.
