New Jersey Representative Chris Smith is at it again. Since taking office, he has attacked abortion and healthcare relentlessly, and there’s no end in sight.
His latest proposal, which would require rape victims who choose abortion to prove to the IRS that an assault occurred, is so extreme it makes my head spin — not just as a rape survivor and abortion rights advocate, but as a basic human being. The last thing sexual assault victims need is to be re-traumatized by the government.
In addition to including this “rape audit” mandate, H.R. 7, which is up for debate this Thursday, would also tax millions of small businesses if their plan includes abortion coverage, which the majority of private plans do. As it stands, abortion is too expensive for many women and access is hard to come by, especially in states like Texas, where the majority of clinics have shut down. Eliminating insurance coverage for abortion healthcare would have devastating ramifications for women across the country.
TAKE ACTION: Take two minutes to sign this petition telling NJ Governor Chris Christie that he MUST condemn Rep. Smith’s rape audit bill.
